Since its introduction in 2002, The MDI Air Car has been causing a small stir in the automotive industry. Its engine, for example, is almost entirely fossil fuel free. The design of the car is remarkably similar to the SMART car, or some of the smaller asian models, but they also make a truck, just in case people need to use it outside urban areas. With all the major engineering issues solved, the only major hurdle left for MDI is selling the car. Its expected that their unusual business model might help with that.

Penn Station was designed by McKim, Mead, and White and erected in 1910 to serve as the centerpiece of the Pennsylvania Railroad empire. Sadly, most of the original Penn Station was demolished in 1963 to make room for the new Madison Square Garden despite significant public outcry to preserve it. Today, Penn Station is a transportation hub for the Long Island Rail Road, New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and the NYC subways. Unfortunately, ambitious plans to return Penn Station to its former grandeur have been shelved.

It started with a woman who wanted to buy a Honda. Elizabeth Fisher wanted to buy a Honda Odessey but like other of us fat folk she was too big for the seat belt. Most other car makers offer seat belt extenders so that everyone can safely strap in. Some offer them for free, some cost no more than $30. Elizabeth contacted Honda who has told her they will not make extenders. Further research found that while Hyundai and Subaru also do not make extenders, nearly every other car maker does. Elizabeth is trying to petition the NHTSB to amend a Federal US regulation that would require car manufacturers to make seat belts or offer extenders to cover everyone, not just people who weigh up to 215 lbs, as they do now. Ironically, the National Transportation Safety Board is big on it's Buckle Up America program which encourages seatbelt use and offers statistics showing how many lives are saved! And while you might not agree with this or just think this is just a "problem" for fat people and big sports jocks, you might also think about how this "problem" affects pregnant women.

It's somehow strange being in a rural area, and having the road suddenly widen out as if there were an interchange, but instead find myself crossing a bridge over something resembling a pasture - there were animals grazing on it! But this pasture looked a lot like an expressway, so I followed it one way and the other, and figured out approximately what the intent had been. After a bit of research, I found that it as an abortive attempt at an expressway, now locally known derisively as the "goat path". The problems which led to it still exists, and Lancaster County is still trying to figure out what to do; the issues no clearer now than they were when construction was stopped. In the meantime savor this post-apocalyptic vision of an expressway covered with grass, running from just shy of another highway to an interchange in the middle of nowhere.
