Over 2,200 years ago, Greek playwright Aristophanes wrote a comedy titled Lysistrata, which told the story of women from warring states who ended the Peloponnesian War. How did they do it, you ask? Until the men stopped fighting and sheathed their swords, the women wouldn't, uh, "sheathe their swords," if you know what I mean. On March 3, the Lysistrata Project will mount (at the time of this posting) 581 readings of Lysistrata in 38 countries in protest of the potential War in Iraq, and with the hope of catching the ear of those who believe, "Democracy is a beautiful thing."

What the Free State Project wants to do is pretty simple: get at least 20,000 libertarianish sorts to move to one single state and then become civically and politically active enough in that state's government and institutions to make that state a "free state" in their lifetimes. Regardless of what you thought of last weekend's INS raid which took Elian Gonzalez back to his father, why not hoard some mementos of the event before it fades from collective memory? You could have a jar of air from Elian's neighborhood, Elian Gonzalez faberge eggs (with insightful religious commentary), and/or the raft used by Elian to get to the United States in the first place.

As many of you know, U.S. citizens do not vote directly in national elections - rather, we deliver our opinions through a labrynthine system known as Electoral Colleges. While the relative merits of Electoral Colleges have been the source of fierce academic debates, serious quantitative rigor remains alien to those schooled in Political Science. Consequently, most essays on the topic are eloquently-crafted polemics built upon poorly-constructed models riddled with questionable assumptions. In this arena, Will Hively's Math Against Tyranny stands alone as a lively, interesting and quantitatively sound defense of Republic democracy.
