How many times have you said, "What this event really needs is doves!" For instance, the White Dove Company can make your wedding or memorial service that much more poetically poignant with their snowy-white trained doves. Satisfied customers abound! Yes, they can find their own way back home (they're pigeons, after all). Imagine the possibilities! And if you don't live in England you can always get your doves in Maui.

Joseph Stalin once said that "quantity has a quality all its own." Although he was probably talking about infantry divisions or tractor quotas, it's equally true of pet ownership. Witness the not-so-fine line between being a mere "cat lover" and a full-blown crazy cat lady. While a cat lover may own two or three pampered felines, a true crazy cat lady owns dozens (or more) and doesn't let concerns like her ability to feed, house, or clean up after her "pets" get in the way of her obsession. Some of America's champion crazy cat ladies include: Gloria Davis from Sarasota, FL (100+ cats), Elizabeth Riddle from Richland, PA (100+ cats), Beverly Hardacre from Methuen, NH (more than 150 cats), Bonnie Kemppainen from Virginia, MN (155+ cats), Marilyn Barletta of Petaluma, CA (196 cats) Debra Rexelle from Modesto, CA (212 cats) and, as the reigning Queen of Crazy Cat Ladies, Hanne Kaea from Omaha, NE with a whopping 270 feral cats living in her house.

As a pet owner, you know how much joy and pleasure can be found in the company of animals. Perhaps your empathy for animal life runs deep enough for you to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle. Good for you! So why are you still buying conventional pet food? Sure, many people dismiss the idea of dogs and cats adopting a vegetarian diet as "unnatural." But consider: is it any more "natural" for dogs and cats to eat the ground-up remains of factory-farmed meat deemed "unfit for human consumption," like dying, diseased or downed cattle? Perhaps you might consider healthier, cruelty-free alternatives. Take a look beyond commercial supermarkets and you will discover an entire industry catering to the meatless diets of both dogs and cats. Unfortunately, most of the web resources used by Veterinarians are fee-based (like VIN), precluding links to articles in the formal literature that outline the impact of imposing a vegetarian diet on carnivorous and omnivorous animals. Cat owners take note: one responsible vegetarian organization has an article urging those thinking about a vegetarian diet for their cat to reconsider.

African pygmy hedgehogs are fantastic pets. They generally don't bother those of us who are allergic to dogs and cats. They require very little cleaning, but you want to give them plenty of exercise. Unfortunately, they're "exotic" pets and so they're not legal everywhere; and in some places like Pennsylvania it's illegal to import them, so you need to find a reputable in-state breeder. Perhaps the best thing about them, however, is they're almost unnervingly cute.

Ok, so there's this computer... product?... called Creatures. There have actually been three versions, but they all share the same fundamental concept: You raise these little guys called norns, teaching them good manners and the like. Most people, when they're kids, get bought a Venus Flytrap. And most of us promptly kill them. For those of you who want to know what you did wrong, try hitting the Venus Flytrap section of the Carnivorous Plant FAQ. The site also includes instructions on how to grow other varieties of carnivorous plants. Why would you want to grow 'em? Well, apart from a general interest in the whole plants-that-eat-flesh thing, they're just damned beautiful.

Who needs real pets, when you can vicariously enjoy them on-line without feeding the big cat a gazelle each day or two? Howlett's Zoo has launched a number of user-controllable webcams on some of the animals, including gorillas and big cats. Apparently the animals were a little shy at first and ripped out the wires and fiddled with the webcams, according to The Register.

I grew up with Samoyed, as did my mother. The one I grew up with was an adorable, sweet-tempered, clown of a dog, like most Samoyeds are. He was a puppy into his last days.. The one mom grew up with was a terror, which is rare for the breed. Someday I'll put her tales of that dog on the Web. Until then, you'll have to suffer with a Samoyed's own story. (OK, so that's hokey. But Samoyeds ARE that goofy.)

Often described as "cats trapped in dogs' bodies" the Basenji, originally bred as an African hunting dog, is unlike any other canine companion in the world.
