"Rather than dedicate the racoons' penis bones to overpopulated humanity, we placed them by our pond, where visiting raccoons would benefit from the resultant sexual potency and fertility among their own species."

Bot flies are large, hairy flies that are common to many parts of the world. They are somewhat more troublesome than the average housefly, however, because their larvae (sometimes called "warbles") are parasitic worms that must grow in the flesh of living mammals. Rodents, rabbits, and livestock are commonly infected in North America, but in South and Central America, humans are also on the menu.

Roadkill is nature's bounty; you can eat it (either out or in) make art with it, make a festive calendar about it, or even use it to teach kids about nature.

Carla Emery is a down-home country girl who wrote the Encyclopedia of Country Living, a friendly, folksy, and detailed guide on food production down on the farm. She is also highly suspicious of hypnotism, as shown by her other book Secret, Don't Tell.

The US Geological Survey, for some reason, runs a fabulous bird identification center that is better than any other I've found on the net. Very useful for confirming that what you saw in your backyard really was a red-tailed hawk or a great blue heron.

Feral children are kids raised by animals who are later found and slowly introduced to society. Oh, they're real and documented, but the most feral of them all is made the subject of mockery on a regular basis.

Urban spelunking may sound like fun, but don't suggest it to filmmaker Marc Singer (no, not that one). He spent two years living in the darkness amidst squalor and rats to complete "Dark Days". The film, which won the 2000 Sundance Film Festival Freedom of Expression Award, documents the the hidden culture of the community of homeless people that lived in the abandoned train tunnels under Riverside Park on Manhattan's West Side until they were forcibly evicted in 1997 by Amtrak workers putting the line back into service.

Where mountain biking and unicycling collide: mountain unicycling. Sounds like fun, and it's apparently not as dangerous as you'd think. Of course, if you're lusting after danger, there's always unicycle jousting.

Tomorrow, June 3rd, is National Trails Day. Find a registered NTD event near you or just find a nearby trail and go for a hike (make sure to bring good boots). If you choose to stay in your air conditioned yuppie-cage, at least check out this kick ass map of US National Trails.
