In response to KELO v. CITY OF NEW LONDON, in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the government has the right to take the property of a private landowner and give it to a private corporation as an act of Eminent Domain, Freestar Media, a video production company trying to break into commercial television with a reality show that 'advances freedom', is trying to use the court ruling to condemn Justice David Souter's house to make room for a "Lost Liberty Hotel" featuring a "Just Desserts Cafe".

I was happy to find the Center for the Public Domain, what with the corporate landgrab for ideas I didn't think were ownable. Still, I wonder if reasonable intellectual property laws can come from an organization with a copyright at the bottom of each page.

Highlights include the European Telecommunication Standards Institute's Lawful Interception Working Group, which is designing standards for eavesdropping on digital networks; Adolf Ogi, the man behind Satos 3, Switzerland's version of the notorious Echelon system; and everyone's open source darling: Apache.

Forensic entomology can be a fascinating subject. After death, a body goes through a number of changes that make it attractive to different types of arthropods; the types, numbers, and stages of development of critters collected from a body can reveal a good deal about it -- the time and cause of death, whether the corpse has been moved, and other interesting tidbits.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a WIPO weapon for global copyright legislation. That's WIPO/OMPI, actually -- the World Intellectual Property Organization/ Organisation Mondiale de la Propriété Intellectuelle . They're trying to redefine the economy of intellectual property in moneyed spaces worldwide. The Digital Future Coalition, educause.edu, and the Association of Research Libraries have related, yet contrastive, presentations on it and the culture around it.

One of the unintended (and most destructive) consequences of politicians' "get tough on crime" posturing are what is known as Mandatory Minimums. Convicted of rape? 7 years, with time off for good behavior. Caught with five marijuana plants? 10 years, no parole. Sound fair? Families Against Mandatory Minimums is a national organization working to repeal state/federal mandatory sentencing laws that remove judicial discretion.

Regardless of its rampant UFOlogist paranoia, this webpage is useful in letting us know that one could get arrested and fined for contact with an extraterrestrial. What does this mean for the SETI@Home people? If that grand distributed computing effort actually decodes something, do we all get arrested? The mind reels.

If you are like me, maybe you wonder exactly when works pass into the public domain. This has all been changed as a result of Sonny Bono or someone using his name, because now that coporations own a lot of works, instead of individuals, and corporations live forever, the list probably won't get much longer.

Billions of dollars are spent arresting people for consensual crimes -- actions that are against the law, but that all participants consent to. Prostitution, drug use, and gambling (at least in some areas) are consensual crimes.

Peter McWilliams' book Ain't Nobody's Business If You Do goes into great detail about the absurdities of consensual crimes, and is well worth reading. Plus, the complete text is at the above link, for you cheapskates!
