Hundreds of fun and useful links in this hippy dippy web directory. They could even help you find Utopia.

Lookin' for something fun to do in the Bay Area? Don't check out the PIX Page unless you what to know what bands were playing back in February of 1998.

My favorite trade magazine has good to be Prepared Foods. All you foodies can stay ahead of the curve with their New Products Showcase. It's recommended to those who want to really know what goes into their food with articles on biotechnology, new legislation, candy consumption, and food trends.

Contrary to accusations, I do think Sarah Dyer is a cartoonist. In fact, I have every issue of "Action Girl" ever published, and am a big fan of her writing for Space Ghost: Coast to Coast to boot.

I was a little skeptical about a list of The 100 Greatest Comic Books of 20th Century (a work in progress), but the author thereof has good, well reasoned explanations of each selection. And although most of the comic books are chosen more for significance than raw quality, he includes Watchmen, Maus, Cerebus, and Sandman, so I can't complain too much.

I'd like to thank the MBA's over at the US Department of Justice for whipping up this little page, to help brainwash our youth while they are still prime. Not to mention, we need to make sure they know the rules of the road.

If you really want to recycle paper, as Beakman and Jax suggest, you're going to run into the problem that your paper, which starts out grey, gets even darker if you try to recycle it again, and then darker still. That's why, in the real world, there is deinking. However, that requires certain enzymes and cannot be done at home in your kitchen, but rather in large industrial plants.

Lesser known than Clara Bow - the "It girl" - is Louise Brooks, another great actress from the 20's and 30's. She epitomized the flapper, not only in appearance but in her defiant, racy lifestyle as well.

While looking for the text of H.R. 3028 - the House bill to ban "cybersquatting" - I found the House of Representatives roll call. Find out what your representatives did yesterday. You can even find out who abstained. Called in sick, maybe? Or maybe they just don’t like 4-H Clubs .

Although several of my favorite cartoonists (Dan Clowes and Adrian Tomine to name two) have no web presence, others do. Check out Jim Woodring's website, which just doesn't do justice to his creepy dreamlike art, or Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer's House of Fun.

Why is it that natural languages like English or Italian, imperfect as they are, seem to work so much better than artificially constructed languages like Esperanto? Check out Umberto Eco’s lecture on the subject.

My all-consuming toy fetish right now is wind-up robots. Especially ones from Japan from the 50s. I have to settle for reproductions, however, since the originals can cost thousands of dollars.

So your atavistic desire to procreate with beautiful women was thwarted by constant rejection? Take heart! You can still bid for their eggs at Ron's Angels. Then again, if you have 50 grand to burn (the opening bid to make babies with Model 99) and still can't land a date - perhaps you shouldn't be in the gene pool after all.

Gourd Music is an independant music label specializing in acoustic music. In addition to offering select acoustic music from other labels, they offer sound recordings of Shaker Music, Americana, Celtic Music, and even strains from Holiday Seasons Long Past.

Edgar Meyer, oft lauded as the best bassist living (and equally at home in both classical and folk camps) has an extensive catalog of offerings. His latest effort (teaming up with classical violinist Joshua Bell and bluegrass virtuosos Sam Bush and Mike Marshall) combines classical and folk into a dizzying, wonderful collusion that simply doesn't last long as it ought to. I cannot recommend it enough.

Team ABL, an Air Force, Boeing, TRW, and Lockheed-Martin consortium, has completed ground testing of a multi-hundred kilowatt laser system intended to be mounted on a 747 for theater missile defense. This big stuff is fine and dandy, but when do we get our personal ray guns, dammit?

If you (like myself) still haven't recovered from the end of Bloom County, you'll be happy to hear that the animated Christmas special A Wish For Wings That Work is coming to video on November 9. If you don't feel like plunking down the ten bucks, tho, clips are available online.

Michael Lewis, who may be best known for injecting the phrase Big Swinging Dick into the lexicon of business journalism through Liar's Poker (a sardonic report on the rise and fall of Salomon Brothers), has a new book out. The New New Thing is a biographical account of uber-geek Jim Clark and his rocky quest in building SGI, Netscape and Healtheon en route to being the biggest swinging dick in Silicon Valley.

You think your favorite on-line comic has an archive? Doonesbury has an on-line archive which goes back to October 26, 1970. It's a great way to learn the past three decades of American political and social history.
