Intrigued by SIGGRAPH but don't want to spring $200 for a full set of conference proceedings? You're in luck: you can get most of this year's papers on-line for free.

Several famous science fiction authors maintain their own homepages (which include free stories and essays): Greg Egan, Robert Sawyer, and David Brin, to name a few.

Special effects junkie Tim Fox has spent a lot of time trying to make Star Wars and Star Trek like special effects. He's got a tutorial on how to take pictures of yourself using a lightsaber.

Can't decide where to eat? zagat.com has the restaurant reviews you've probably seen in their restaurant survey guidebooks.

It seems that The Man doesn't just oppress the little guy, sometimes he delivers a beat-down to giant faceless corporations as well. Boo-hoo.

Transformers. They're more than meets the eye, and, apparently, the toy that will not die.

Wondering which particular pool of blithering idiots would take evolution out of science education? God bless the Internet.

New technology, old time rock and roll: therollingstones.com. New technology, low cost high quality self defense products: ledzeppelin.com. Uh....

Addicted to ebay? Too lazy to write your own monitoring software? Afraid to leave your desk for fear that you'll be outbid on a very important auction? It's time for ebay a-go-go.

Wired to the teeth but never even thought of getting a fax machine until someone embarassingly asks you for your fax number? Get your faxes through email via eFax.

Translucent, colored plastic has never been sexier. Or more popular.

This Saturday (August 21) at 23:49:57 UTC the 10 bit GPS week counter will roll over. The effects will be minimal as most GPS receivers were built with the rollover in mind. However, I certainly won't be flying anywhere that night.

Everyone knows about Project Gutenberg, but there are several less-well-known sites dedicated to distributing free text. Berkeley's Alex Catalogue is a good place to start, as is Bibliomania and, of course, Carnegie Mellon's own On-Line Books Page. If you're feeling like sticking it to The Man, then also check out Banned Books On-Line, also at CMU.

Since we're not radioactive dust, here's some information on Cassini, and here's some people who spent an awful lot of time worrying about it. These people were worried too, but they're weird

Memepool readers who are viewing us through a browser at the State Prison library - take heart! You can still purge your damning criminal record and find a good job after your release if you click on EraseYourConviction.com.

The themes may change, but it's good to see that the creators of jodi.org will always be on crack.

TreeLoot is giving away money to those who have nothing better to do than sit around clicking on imagemaps. There's probably a catch in there somewhere, but we aren't bored enough to go figure it out, so, hey, go nuts.

mayhem.net keeps you up to date on everything American society would like to hide. Did you know that the Unabomber was a volunteer for CIA mind-control experiements?

I'm not sure where I stand amongst the other 43,000 or so SIGGRAPH '99 attendees, but I thought the Morphable Model for the Synthesis of 3D Faces paper was much cooler than Teddy. From a single image of a face, this system can make a fully animated 3d model that is frightenly realistic.

As any student of anthropology knows, adolescence (the extended period of time between puberty and professional employment/marriage), is a peculiar by-product of modern Western culture. But plagued as we may be with the idiosyncratic problems associated with hosting a population of horomone-crazed jobless youths untethered by the civilizing institution of marriage, I remain skeptical of the campaign (driven, no doubt, by the powerful meme-machine of Judeo-Christian sexual repression) to dissuade young people from doing the obvious.

Like Riotgrrl on crack (in a good way), Smile and Act Nice features brutally frank and hysterical commentaries targeted to the online woman, as well as the funniest sex column name I've ever seen: Ho in the Know.

It's well known that many diseases are related to meat eating. Ironically, it may be the hormones released in fear by the animals right before they're slaughtered that cause these problems.

Bea Arthur had a long career as a television, film and stage actreess. She's probably best known (now) as Dorothy on The Golden Girls or Maude. But did you know about her Dance with Urkel?

Sir David Attenborough's excellent Life of Birds series also has a similarly engaging website. (But watch out, Kansa, they cover evolution!)

Jack Chick translates and localizes his tracks, with some odd results. His most famous tract, This Was Your Life has a couple of iconic scenes, the introductory rich guy shot, lightbulb God, and the examination of conscience scene. Chick apparently subcontracts out the localization jobs, leading to cosmic perspective and frightening 70's fashion in the Chinese Version. Apparently, the quality of the subcontracts vary, since the Farsi version of the Rich Guy just has a big beard drawn on him.

Readers of the recently posted "bad buzzwords" link who had trouble distinguishing between stupid marketing terms ("extranet"), long standing hacker usage that has crept its way into business meetings ("bandwidth"), terms that business people have come up with to sound like insiders ("take it off line"), and actual legitimate geek usage that the idiotic author neither understood nor took the time to properly research and report on ("cracker") would be advised to check out the reference source on the subject: The Jargon File (or, for those of you who prefer your documents in dead tree form, The New Hacker's Dictionary (note that the print version is based on the file from three years ago, and is out of date).

God does not change, as our Christer friends constantly remind us - and if that's true, modern-day believers should practice the God-sanctioned institution of polygamy. Patriarchal Christianity - genuine movement or slick scheme to sucker meme-vulnerable women into your personal harem? You tell me.

Every industry has its own jargon, that special lexicon designed to separate the insiders from the poseur. This is especially true of the tech industry, where everyone is scrambling to look like an insider, even if they heard about it only a month ago. Annoying, hipper-than-thou terms are sprouting faster than overpriced IPOs of shitty money-vomiting e-prefixed companies and spreading faster than the Melissa virus. A rogue's gallery of the etymological trainwreck can be found here.
