Are you puzzled by all the complicated male-oriented Y2K survival guides out there? Do you believe that women need an explanation that stays away from confusing, hard-to-understand things like technology, and focuses on emotions and the family? If so, Y2K for Women should be nice and comforting.

Following up on my earlier item about anamorphic widescreen versus pan-and-scan, here's an excellent tutorial that uses Shockwave Flash to demonstrate the interaction between a film's source media and your viewing device.

In the Czech town of Kutna Hora is the All Saints' Chapel, whose interior is decorated with the bones of the 40,000 people who have been buried in its graveyard since 1278. Jan Svankmeyer did a 10 minute film about it, so you know it has to be cool.

The sudden scream of battle brings your party to a halt.... ....will your stalwart band choose to [F]ight or [R]un?
Those of us who grew up on IBM ATs or clunky pre-Mac Apples in the 80's may remember that line from a delightful computer role-playing game sent six characters from the Adventurer's Guild into the dangerous city of Skara Brae. Like anything that appeals to larval, pupal and post-chrysalic geeks, the game has spawned a webring worth of fansites, including an dungeon level-by-level review/guide at The COMPLETE Bard's Tale Home Page.

Force Ten sells equipment and books for "revenge, spying, police and miltary" uses. If you're planning on doing any serious stalking, however, you'd better get a night-vision scope, too.

You can never have too many intelligent agents. I've found that Amazon.com's recommendation service just isn't doing it for me, so now I am in search of something as good as the defunct Ringo project (which eventually became firefly to recommend music to me. It looks like MovieCritic might be one possible solution for cinema, though.

A pretty underground ping pong ball lined inside with 13,000 photodetectors and filled ultrapure water, the Super-Kamoikande has produced some evidence that neutrinos have mass! It may be time to revise the textbooks and think about cosmology: it has been observed for some time that the sun produces too few neutrinos, and this may be a hint that the number detected was a result of oscillations. The neutrino may be a candidate for being missing or dark matter. Check out the official SuperK site for more hot neutrino tips. OR just go straight to the photos.

Those of us who have already grown up but still watch anime in our 20's may remember a delightful Blade-Runner-esque dystopian science-fiction movie that sent a cyborg woman into a superbly animated ultraviolent world. Like anything that appeals to pupal geeks, Ghost in the Shell has spawned a shitload of fansites, including a weapon-by-weapon review/analysis at Weapons of Ghost in the Shell.

Pocket Skeleton is the web site of freelance illustrator Elise Soroka. Check out their gallery. My favorite works of hers combine a spare line, stylized design, and an emotional intensity nearly hidden by her disarming use of color.

Apparently, the true meaning of The Force is a matter under some debate. While there are those who view The Force as evil, there are also those on the other side of the debate. For instance, Andrew Harter makes the case for Yoda... And I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell.

Pinball 2000 is Williams/Bally's last-ditch effort to keep pinball alive. It's totally modular, based on a Cyrix MediaGX motherboard, and overlays video effects on the glass above the action. Since they're the only companies making decent pinball games these days, let's hope they stay alive a bit longer...

Into obsolete videodisc technology? The RCA Selectavision Videodisc player lives on at www.cedmagic.com. The CED (Capacitance Electronic Disc) was the only stylus-based video tech and struggled to find a market from 1981 to 1986, before being completely given up for dead. The site features more technical specs than you'd probably want to know, plus a nice CED title database, listing everything released in the format.
