When you mix grassroots organizing with professional baseball, you just might end up buying the Expos.

The Enron scandal has become the world's most famous cautionary tale of what can happen when well-meaning CEOs like Kenneth Lay (Bush's leading financial patron and, completely coincidentally, co-author of Bush's energy policy (which regulates Enron)) are "duped" into doing horribly evil things without realizing it by just about everyone they've ever hired, done business with or met for the past sixteen years. ("Aw... Lay issums a poor wittle bumblingly-innocent bunny!") Happily there's a silver lining: the sudden widespread approval of corporate whistle-blowing is blossoming into one of the healthiest political trends in twenty years (law offices are reportedly swamped). And even non the non-Internet-savvy are catching on that it's an imprudent and needless gamble to invest in, partner with or accept a position at a company without first peeking through their dirty laundry.

The grammarians among us may note that the apostrophe in Women's Studies is possessive. While this is grammatically correct, the egalitarians among us may wonder if it is ethical to imply possession of academic discourse through punctuation.

It seems there exists a niche for one whose life's calling is gleaning data by studying a lot of old crap and taking notes about it.

Enough of the "squeezably soft" and the pictures of baby chicks, baby dolls and fluffy bunnies. I want a toilet paper that gives me the sense I'm getting a product that will do exactly what I'm buying it for.

Old maps can be fascinating but, by their very nature as historical artifacts, can also contain feature names that are offensive to our modern sensibilities. A cursory place name search of modern USGS quads will unveil several "Negro Lakes"and "Japanese Creeks"that didn't always have these (comparatively) pleasant names. Some offensive names have been overlooked altogether, and remain on current additions of USGS maps. See if you can spot the racist place names on some of the maps that were posted earlier.

Phony Pony tire swings are much cooler than your average tire swing. Not only are they cute but they make use of old tires, promoting recycling. (Hubcaps not included.)

The Stripper-FAQ provides information on how to work as an exotic dancer succesfully. The tools of the trade section gives some info on basics such as care of your body and shoes that are good for dancing in. The Auditioning/Dancing section gives some way cool advice like, 'Go to the Ultimate Strip Club List and look for clubs in your area. The reviews will give you a very good idea of whether it's a place you want to work. i.e. If the guy says, "Wow, it was great. This girl let me feel her up" It's obviously not a place you want to work.' Most important is the safety section that gives some good advice for protecting yourself.

Ever hear of the game Chess? Reviewer Greg Kasavin hates the first edition but loves the second, realtime strategy version. Reviews elsewhere have been mixed. The whole controversy reminds me how much I agree with game designer Bob Abbott's assertion that video games suck.

The US Geological Survey, for some reason, runs a fabulous bird identification center that is better than any other I've found on the net. Very useful for confirming that what you saw in your backyard really was a red-tailed hawk or a great blue heron.

While everyone is getting their panties in a knot about the fact that google is allowing sponsored ad rankings. I find it much more interesting that you can now do your searching in any number of nonexistent and dead languages such as Klingon, Latin, Pig Latin, and of course 1337 5p34k. If by some chance there is no google interface in your language, then you can volunteer to help them translate. I wonder how much longer it will be until lojban and elvish show up.

Margaret Sanger, feminist icon and the founder of Planned Parenthood is usually accorded unquestioned respect and praise. However, she was also a crypto-racist supporter of eugenics who championed sweeping sterilization laws. Naturally, these views have been downplayed by abortion supporters and exaggerated by abortion foes, but should be kept in mind before handing out awards in her name.

Hotels have been built out of ice. Everyone from the ancient Balinese to Frank Lloyd Wright has built on water. But the NY architects Diller+Scofidio are the only ones wacko enough to try creating a building out of water vapor (or so it will seem). Visit at Swiss Expo '02, assuming it works.
