| Thursday Sep 28, 2000 | You've all heard about such famous
"chatter
bots" as
Eliza and
Parry,
which can imitate human conversation (over a limited domain) fairly well.
However, another, less well-known, program called
Racter
once
wrote
(or at least
helped to write)
a whole book.
This collection of stories and poems, "The Policeman's Beard is Half Constructed," was published
in 1984 under the amusing pen-name of
"Mark V. Cheney" (later changed to "Racter").

| Wong Fei-Hung was a Chinese healer, martial artist, and genuine folk hero of the late 19th and early 20th century who is also the father of modern Hung-Gar kung fu. Kwan Tak-Hing portrayed him in hundreds of movies. More recently, he has been seen in films such as Once Upon a Time in China (where Jet Li kicks the crap out of Americans exploiting China) and Drunken Master II (where Jackie Chan kicks the crap out of Brits exploiting China). to History by nyarl |
| Wednesday Sep 27, 2000 | Looks like the US is falling behind in the race to promote milk. Perhaps we need a new spokesperson. Then again, why are we trying so hard to push this product? Perhaps drinking something designed for a baby calf may not be the safest thing in the world.

| By simply trying the most obvious URL, I stumbled across an impressively complete non-commercial guide to cheese. It has a database of 652 cheeses including Jusstoleipa, Buffalo, and Stinking Bishop. You can also view cheese by country, texture, or what animal the milk comes from. They also have cheese recipes and, surprisingly, cheese news. to Food by keith |

| Tired of those geek paper dolls? Try Dame Darcy's Flash-enabled Paper Doll Fun. What could be more fun than dressing up siamese twins, Igpay the pig, and a shrimp named Scampi (who actually has no possessions and can do nothing but rattle and insult you)? I'm sure I can think of
something.

| The last thing I usually expect to find when I'm sitting in a Starbucks in 516 [Nassau County, Long Island, for you non-New Yorkers] is an unique and entertaining blend of folk-pop and improvisation. Last Saturday night, instead of the usual bold expressions of Komodo Dragon Blend at the Starbucks on Hempstead Turnpike, I sampled the intriguing and fun blend of 28 Orange Street. Comprised of premium sharp-witted lyrics spontaneously blended with a perfect balance of only the finest honey-voiced, self-effacing vocalists, this flavorful group is truly exceptional. Distinctive and assertive, yet full-bodied, smooth, deep and earthy. Yum. to Music by rich |
