In a classic David and Goliath confrontation, Irdial-Discs, experimental independent music label from the UK, brought a High Court action against WEA International over their CD release "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" by the group Wilco, which flagrantly infringes Irdial's copyright. "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" bears a track entitled "Poor Places", which contains one minute and thirty seconds of sound from "Phonetic Alphabet Nato" lifted directly from disc one of the quadruple CD "The Conet Project: Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations". The Conet Project track features a female voice repeating over and over the phrase, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", which Wilco took for the title of their critically acclaimed CD.

The Crusades were expeditions undertaken, in fulfilment of a solemn vow, to deliver the Holy Places from Mohammedan tyranny.

The idea of the crusade corresponds to a political conception which was realized in Christendom only from the eleventh to the fifteenth century; this supposes a union of all peoples and sovereigns under the direction of the popes. All crusades were announced by preaching. After pronouncing a solemn vow, each warrior received a cross from the hands of the pope or his legates, and was thenceforth considered a soldier of the Church. Crusaders were also granted indulgences and temporal privileges, such as exemption from civil jurisdiction, inviolability of persons or lands, etc.

DJ Q-Bert, former member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz (heck, these guys are so good, they made their own mixer) created a concept album by the name of Wave Twisters back in 98, which, among other things, maintained a story line throughout the entire LP. This fantastic record then spawned a unique multimedia project: Wave Twisters, the movie. Reason enough for me to finally buy a DVD player, despite the warnings about watching it too often.

When Microsoft chairman Bill Gates was shot dead on December 2, 1999, it was a tragedy that resonated throughout the world. But as time wears on, that tragedy has developed into a mystery for many observers, who see police misconduct and a cover-up where others see an open-and-shut case. This week at the esteemed Slamdance Film Festival, Nothing So Strange follows the efforts of an organized group of these skeptics.

The Beowulf project has nothing to do with the adventures of a great Scandinavian warrior of the 6th century. Instead, it is the concept of wiring cheap, off-the-shelf computers together to form supercomputers. Taking a critical standpoint towards mass-media is generally a wise decision, if one wishes to keep a level head during stressful times. Not only has CNN failed to mention some rather interesting background info on America's most wanted Terrorist, now claims are circulating that the footage of people dancing on the streets of Palestina is, in fact, 10 years old. These claims have been proven to be incorrect as well as recanted by their origin, and apparently the disappearance of said footage can be accredited to Palestinian authorities threatening camera crews. Nontheless, keep this media giant's flawed record in mind when watching the news.
