The "Uncanny Valley" is why zombies don't seem normal, robots aren't going to pass as humans very soon, and prosthetic limbs call special attention.

Forensic entomology can be a fascinating subject. After death, a body goes through a number of changes that make it attractive to different types of arthropods; the types, numbers, and stages of development of critters collected from a body can reveal a good deal about it -- the time and cause of death, whether the corpse has been moved, and other interesting tidbits.

Ten gigabytes on tape might seem dull... but on adhesive tape?! The European Media Lab in Heidelberg gives you 10737418240 reasons to love the sticky stuff, and the same technique could be used for holographic storage.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a WIPO weapon for global copyright legislation. That's WIPO/OMPI, actually -- the World Intellectual Property Organization/ Organisation Mondiale de la Propriété Intellectuelle . They're trying to redefine the economy of intellectual property in moneyed spaces worldwide. The Digital Future Coalition, educause.edu, and the Association of Research Libraries have related, yet contrastive, presentations on it and the culture around it.

Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon mentions van Eck phreaking -- reading the electromagnetic signature of a device to decode what is displayed on it or though it remotely, even through walls and from a distance. TEMPEST may whet your conspiratorial interests about it, as may this page on Electronics Surveillance and Espionage that includes a link to the original Wim van Eck paper on remotely detecting electomagnetic radiation from display devices. I noticed a trivial application of this when i put my powered speakers too close to my x.10 transceiver and sent a command to dim the lights.

Who needs real pets, when you can vicariously enjoy them on-line without feeding the big cat a gazelle each day or two? Howlett's Zoo has launched a number of user-controllable webcams on some of the animals, including gorillas and big cats. Apparently the animals were a little shy at first and ripped out the wires and fiddled with the webcams, according to The Register.

Possibly the first publicly available on-line machine translation engine for English to Chinese has been launched at readworld.com.cn, Try entering some text in english and checking the translations! (Note: this uses the gb2312 character set; without an appropriate font, it will probably be unreadable.)

Don't let a dead animal go to waste -- put it on the net! The Squashed Bug Zoo makes squished insects seem sublime. My favorite is the roach-thing.

Trouble visualizing huge hierarchies? Take a look at hyperbolic trees! It's an interesting way to navigate big tree structures, and it's fun to click around on. The demo requires Java.

A pretty underground ping pong ball lined inside with 13,000 photodetectors and filled ultrapure water, the Super-Kamoikande has produced some evidence that neutrinos have mass! It may be time to revise the textbooks and think about cosmology: it has been observed for some time that the sun produces too few neutrinos, and this may be a hint that the number detected was a result of oscillations. The neutrino may be a candidate for being missing or dark matter. Check out the official SuperK site for more hot neutrino tips. OR just go straight to the photos.

MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) -- tiny machines, tailor-made by the tens of thousands. Micromachines offer tantalizing possibilites as self-reorganizing cooperative physical systems. You can bet this is hot with the military, as well as industry: The MEMS Exchange is a technology transfer organization set up around the topic; the MEMS Clearinghouse covers breaking news; and Sandia National Labs are good starting places for the memer.

yapc -- yet another perl conference. This is a cheap rogue perl conference (at ~ $50 instead of ~ $1000) built from the bottom up. More Perl to ya!
