In 1996 physicist Alan Sokal wrote an article for the prestigious post-structuralist literary journal "Social Text" in which he claimed that all of physics is relative to the observer . It was a hoax -- intended by Sokal to highlight the liberal intelligentsia's drift away from social issues and toward navel-gazing. There was just a little acrimony.

It lead to the end of a brutal regime in Argentina, got Margaret Thatcher reelected, was some of the most intense naval action since World War II, and led to the profound realization that missiles are very very cheap, and ships and men aren't.
